One of the first SciFi books I read was Asimov’s foundation trilogy. The concept of pyschohistory being a mathematical science was appealing to my teen-aged self. While my perspective has, shall we say, changed, the idea of representing things mathematically, not as an end to itself, but as a predictive and clarifying tool is still compelling. In Neuroscience Postdoc Blog Arseny develops an equation to predict the probability of getting a job based on the population distribution within his department. Very good. His numbers suggest 11%, which is not a heck of a lot better than getting a K-award.
